"Her best album in a very long while"
Colin Irwin
Mojo Album of the Month
"This is quite simply the best folk album released since the first solo stirrings from Shane Macgowan"
Virgin Net, Critics Choice
"This CD is the culmination of Maddy Prior's new outlook and approach, where she apparently follows the unwritten rules of the tradition without actually adhering to them! A rare trick to acomplish. Ravenchild is not a good album - it's brilliant"
Mel Howley

Kathryn Tickell![]() | Hear Kathryn Tickell talk about the influences which have shaped her style, her background in England's north-east, and her work with other artists like Sting. The interview was recorded in 1997 with the release of her album The Gathering.
"The Gathering is named after a wonderful festival in Cork where the organisers, either out of musical curiosity or sheer devilment, seem to spend all year dreaming up unlikely musical pairings. On arrival at the festival we poor, unsuspecting musicians are told who we are expected to duet with over the weekend's concerts. One of my unexpected duet partners was harmonica player, Brendan Power - you'll hear the results later on..." |

Kathryn's 1999 release Debateable Lands is her interpretation of the different characteristics of the Debateable Lands from the time of the border reivers (raiders) up to the present day. The Debateable Lands are that part of the border country, about four miles wide and more than a dozen miles long, which stradles the old West Marches of Scotland and England. Ownership was disputed between the two countries and the area was a constant menace and nuisance to both, becoming a haven for outlaws and troublemakers. It is a bleak but beautiful place. | |

Maddy Prior
Hear Maddy Prior introduce the album Flesh & Blood.
"One of the great incest ballads [Flesh & Blood]. A devastating and compelling story told in so few words. The rude intrusion of music and dancing into a mind torn with grief is heart rending.I more and more realize how much of my taste and style is based in the 60's revival - formed by many talented musicians and singers all of whom researched with great energy their own repertoires that have now become part of a background body of material available to all. I am grateful for having been among them". ![]() Full interview published 27 April 1999. |
